A Taurean's Take on Gen Z

I am in my late 40s and have been given a new tag. I am told that I belong to the Gen X. Also that there is a Gen Z, Gen Alpha and Millennials. I am sure the list doesn't end here. While these tags are proudly thrown around as if it is as sacrosanct as the theory of evolution, the Taurean must ask the obvious question. What changed and does it really matter?

But when I witness a septuagenarian leader, who has been elected THRICE to lead Bharath as the Prime Minister, verbally abused with the choicest of expletives which are new to me, when the name of his deceased mother who passed away after living for 100 years is dragged in the worst possible manner, it hits me hard and yes, the GEN tag does offer a clue. I am happy I do not belong to Gen Z.

The Supreme Guru, Shri Krishna Himself proclaimed:

Bg. 17.15

अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् ।
स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्‍मयं तप उच्यते ॥ १५ ॥

anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ
satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat
svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva
vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate

Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature.
Gen Z, because your elders were busy trying to make the family wealthier to support you, they forgot to enlighten you on the tags that really mattter.

Bg. 14.5

सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणा: प्रकृतिसम्भवा: ।
निबध्‍नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् ॥ ५ ॥

sattvaṁ rajas tama iti
guṇāḥ prakṛti-sambhavāḥ
nibadhnanti mahā-bāho
dehe dehinam avyayam
Material nature consists of three modes – goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes.

Bg. 18.47

श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुण: परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् ।
स्वभावनियतं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्‍नोति किल्बिषम् ॥ ४७ ॥

śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ
para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt
svabhāva-niyataṁ karma
kurvan nāpnoti kilbiṣam
It is better to engage in one’s own occupation, even though one may perform it imperfectly, than to accept another’s occupation and perform it perfectly. Duties prescribed according to one’s nature are never affected by sinful reactions.
Dear Gen Z, engage in your vocation with utmost passion and strive to move from your ignorance to goodness. In the process, your words and deeds will be seen as worthy of the only tag that really matters. Being Humane.
