Uncle Sam - the mighty Toll Keeper

     
A research spearheaded by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)  based on an iconic structural study from the late 1990s and early 2000s , led by prominent organizational psychologists,systematically evaluated over 80 different occupations based on a combined score of psychological distress, lack of control, and physical fatigue.

The study locked in exactly the two anchors which I remember from my reading of news reports about the same at the absolute top of the index:

1. Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) — The Apex of Cognitive Stress
ATCs consistently scored the absolute highest on the scale.

• The Fatigue Driver: The role demands relentless, three-dimensional spatial calculations in real-time under extreme, life-or-death time pressure.

• The Burnout Factor: Because an ATC has zero margin for error and must maintain hyper-vigilance for hours on end, the psychological toll produces profound, acute cognitive exhaustion.

2. Toll Collectors — The Apex of Monotonous & Environmental Strain
Right behind the life-or-death intensity of aviation sat the seemingly simple job of the highway toll booth operator.

• The Fatigue Driver: While an ATC deals with hyper-complex problem-solving, a toll collector suffers from extreme monotony combined with high ambient hostility.

• The Burnout Factor: Operators face rapid-fire, repetitive micro-interactions, constantly dealing with angry or rushed drivers, while trapped in a confined space directly breathing in highly toxic vehicle exhaust fumes for entire shifts. The study highlighted that the complete lack of operational control over their environment, combined with high physical and verbal stress, made it one of the most draining jobs in existence.

Now with Mr.Trump at the helm, it seems Uncle Sam wants to be the toll keeper for the ships passing through Hormuz Straits. On top of it, he wants the Gulf nations to reimburse him for the war for which he is as much responsible as Iran.

This will definitely will be the last nail in the US superpower status coffin. Their failure to deliver safety even after collecting the TOLL, which will certainly happen, will make the US look like, well street bullies who can't even keep their backyard protected.

What if China uses the same logic to create its own choke points and India (which will never do) also uses the same logic ? If US plays the role of a toll collector, Hormuz will be a hot target not only for Iran or the IRGC, but for Houthis, Hizbollahs, Hamas, North Koreans, Russians, Chinese, absolutely anyone who wish to have a shot at the Super Power.

Well, Mr. Trump, be careful what you wish for. Lest your wish should actually be granted !!
