I spent the winter vacation travelling across this great nation. It was a memorable tour from Jammu to Varanasi to Delhi to Chennai to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh to Goa and then back to Jammu.
The year got off to a pious start at the oldest city of the world, with some new friends. This was my first visit to Varanasi and I hope to return to the banks of the Holy river Ganges when the right time comes. Delhi was a stopover for a day and night. Definitely on the list for an extended stay at the earliest.
Met my best friend and his family at Chennai. Loved the time spent with the adorable two year old Vybhu. The Chennai book fair was another attraction. Having gone thus far, I thought of going to my native state of Kerala. But I decided against it as I didn't want to lose the momentum!!!
My child, Ravi met me at Nellore and the days spent with him were the highlight of this vacation. My friends from Andhra were as delightful as ever.
Goa was the perfect place to unwind in the company of an old student and his kind father. The climate, landscape and seafood reminded me of Kerala.
Anyone who travels across India would be amazed by the sheer vastness of this great nation which offers so much variety. From the sub-zero temperatures at Jammu Kashmir to the hot Southern India, the conservative Varanasi to cosmopolitan Goa, the under-developed Poonch to ever changing Chennai everything is a study of contrasts.
The number of different languages that one gets to hear on such a trip is bewildering. Still, one forms bondings with people who can't comprehend one's language and develop a sense of belonging. This is one of the most important factors that make this country great. The way in which little children understand and respond to strangers who speak foreign language makes me wonder why we tend to have so many misunderstandings with people who have so much in common with us!!!
On the flip side, I was deeply troubled by the amount of regret that majority of us carry. That life is but a sorrowful journey with some forced moments of bliss for the materialistic man is not a revelation for me. However, I am sad to see almost everyone echo the same lines. From the learned pundit to the street dwellers, the head of the family to the careless youth, the pleasant chramer to the grim workaholic, everyone would let out a deep sigh.... They would whisper, 'I wish I had....' or 'if only I could...'
People are afraid to choose. Afraid to live the dream. I may lose all that I cherish. You may hate me for the choice that I make.. But I tell you...
Don't refuse to live because you are afraid to die...
Making sense??? Hopefully!!!
